SIGNED in ink by Barnum and dated Dec. 24th, 1887 on an off-white 3 x 1.25 inch card, tipped in to the front free endpaper. An early edition of this highly regarded book of its day orginally aimed at young adults. Full bound red cloth with brown and silver titles on spine and front board with beautiful illustrations on front board of two exotic birds and a lion coiled by a snake. All legible in fine detail. Text includes numerous detailed illustration cuts and plates in black and white. Text is clean throughout as are the decorative victorian style endpapers. A beautifully illustrated volume depicting adventures and travels around the world gathering wildlife for zoo's and circuses. A fascinating volume with a section at the end discussing animal behavior. A near fine copy of this scarce edition, with a hint of subtle soiling to card, front hinge very slightly loose and mild wear and light staining to front board.
